What Is Pranayama and Why It Matters Today

As a Yoga Instructor and Kundalini Magnetic Resonance Therapy practitioner, I use breathwork quite a lot in what I do. So what is pranayama ? It is the art and science of working with the breath and in conjunction with the yogic hand gestures, can be very powerful. Prana or Chi, means life force or vital energy, and ayama, means expansion or regulation. It's not something we can see, but we can definitely feel it. Pranyama “breathing exercises,” uses a mindful way of directing the subtle energy within the body to animate every cell within.

The busyness of modern life often keeps us in a shallow, rushed rhythm of breath, especially when we are stressed about health, work, or starting a family. Over time, this can disrupt hormones, sleep, digestion, and your mood. When you breathe deeply, you are sending a clear signal of safety to your nervous system and allowing your innate healing intelligence to do its work.

What I love to do is to actually move or shake my body with my deep breathing, so I can release and shift anything that's causing me to be an issue. Emotion.... Energy in Motion !

Life Force: The Subtle Energy Behind the Breath

When prana flows freely, we feel balanced and resilient. When it is depleted or blocked, we may notice fatigue, tension, or emotional overwhelm.

Conscious breathwork is one of the most accessible ways to influence this life force. Each slow, steady inhale invites energy in; each complete exhale helps release what you no longer need—stagnant air, but also mental clutter and emotional residue. Over time, this gentle rhythm can restore a sense of inner spaciousness that is especially precious when navigating fertility journeys or pregnancy changes.

How Breathwork Can Help Boost Fertility

Fertility is influenced by far more than your reproductive organs. Hormonal balance, circulation, sleep quality, environment factors, nutrition, weight, genetics and stress levels, all play powerful roles. While breathwork is not a substitute for medical care, it can be a meaningful way of addressing some of the underlying factors of what's going on for us, in a natural, non-invasive way.

  • Can help to reduces stress hormones: Slow, rhythmic breathing activates the parasympathetic (“rest and digest”) response, helping to lower cortisol and adrenaline, which can otherwise disrupt ovulation and sperm quality.

  • It improves blood flow: Deep belly breathing encourages better circulation to the pelvic area, supporting healthy reproductive tissues and hormone delivery.

  • Enhances emotional resilience: The fertility journey can be emotionally intense. Regular breathwork offers a safe, practical way to process disappointment, release anxiety or fear, making space for hope and calm.

💡 A Gentle Practice to Try:

Place your hands on your lower belly, inhale through the nose for a count of four, softly feel the belly rise, and exhale for a count of six. Repeat for five to ten minutes daily to invite relaxation and support circulation.

Calming Pregnancy With Conscious Breathing

Pregnancy is a time of profound transformation for you and your body, as it grows not only a baby but also an amazing organ called the placenta. As your body grows this new life, your nervous system, hormones, and emotions are also shifting. Many expectant parents experience waves of excitement mixed with worry, disrupted sleep, and physical discomfort. For these, I have found in my Pregnancy Yoga classes, that pranayama becomes a steady anchor to help you to return to your center, breath by breath. I also teach you how to use the Winner Flow device for pregnancy, labour and birth, as another tool which controls your breathing by extending the exhale. Breathwork can;

  • Soothe anxiety: Gentle breathing patterns help quiet racing thoughts, creating a calmer inner environment that your baby can also benefit from.

  • Support for better sleep: A few minutes of slow exhalation breath before bed can ease the transition into rest, even when your body feels restless.

  • Build confidence for birth: Practicing breath awareness during pregnancy prepares you with a familiar tool for labour, something you can rely on with every surge/contraction.

Restorative breathing positions can ease pregnancy tension and support deeper relaxation.

⚠️ Safety Note: During pregnancy, be mindful and just do soft, comfortable practices. Never hold your breath or do vigorous techniques,. Always consult your healthcare provider or a prenatal yoga specialist before starting something new.

Why Breathwork Is Good for EVERYONE

You do not need to be trying to conceive or pregnant to enjoy the benefits from pranayama. This can be a powerful tool which you have direct access to. Whether you are working in a demanding job, have caring responsibilities, health challenges, or simply the fast pace of modern life, breathwork offers a simple way to reset from the inside out.

  • Emotional balance: Regular practice can help to reduce mood swings and other emotional reactions when confronted by difficult conversations or stressful moments.

  • Mental clarity: By increasing oxygen flow and calming your nervous system, pranayama supports focus, creativity, and clear thinking.

  • Everyday resilience: Helping your nervous system to cope with all that life throws at you.

Bringing Pranayama Into Your Daily Life

You do not need special equipment or long sessions to experience the benefits of breathwork. Start where you are, with the breath you already have. Choose one or two moments in your day—upon waking, before meals, or before sleep, to pause, soften your shoulders, and take a handful of conscious breaths. Be mindful and follow the breath as it enters the body and then exits. Over time, this simple ritual can deepen into a powerful practice that supports you, no matter what life journey you are on.

Ultimately, pranayama is an invitation to befriend your own life force. With each mindful inhale and exhale, you are reminding your body that it is safe, capable, and deeply wise—a message that benefits not only you, but also any new life you may be welcoming into the world and also for everyone around you.

💗 A Simple Invitation

Pause.
Soften your shoulders.
Inhale slowly and deeply.
Exhale even slower again.

Your breath is always here .... a doorway back to yourself
